The Television and Radio Commission of Armenia

The Television and Radio Commission of Armenia

The Television and Radio Commission of Armenia is an independent state authority established in 2001 to regulate Armenia’s broadcasting sector. Its creation followed major political and legal reforms after independence, when the country transitioned toward a демократическая media environment with free and private broadcasters.

The Commission is responsible for licensing television and radio companies, supervising their activities, and ensuring compliance with legislation. It protects freedom, independence, and pluralism in broadcasting while safeguarding the public’s right to accurate and comprehensive information. It also sets content standards, particularly to protect minors and limit harmful material.

Initially appointed by the President, the Commission’s structure has evolved over time. Today, all members are elected by the National Assembly for fixed terms under the 2020 Law on Audiovisual Media. The Commission also cooperates with international regulatory bodies and works to strengthen transparency, independence, and public trust in the media sector.
